Vintage Pink Gooseberry Pyrex Inspired Tea Towels

While the the majority of our house is decorated around a mid-century modern style, I’ve opted for straight up mid-century with a nice dose of kitsch (e.g. my chicken tea cosy) for our kitchen. I think it adds quite a bit of needed cheer to what is otherwise a pretty gloomy room – the small windows don’t get much light, the countertops are dark, and there is dark wood floor, cabinets, and ceiling. Someday we’ll do a major remodel, but in the meantime I’m adding in things that are bright and happy (and by bright and happy I usually mean pink) and it’s already making a difference.

My Aunt got me started on a collection of vintage pink gooseberry print pyrex bowls. I’ve kept my eye out at thrift stores and have added a couple more to my collection. They definitely fulfill my kitchen requirements of being cheerful and mid-century, and of course I love the fact that they are pink!

I was offered free custom print fabric by MyFabricDesigns and thought that designing and printing some tea towels to match my gooseberry pyrex would be the perfect project to start with. It only required cutting and sewing straight lines, which I couldn’t mess up, even with full-blown pregnancy brain (I started and finished this project before Evelyn’s arrival). I had fun illustrating the gooseberry design and playing with scale and color for the tea towels.

I printed the design on MyFabricDesigns linen-cotton canvas and found that the quality of the fabric and printing (and their customer service) was quite nice! They have quite an assortment of fabrics and I would strongly recommend ordering a swatch book before printing fabric as it is generously sized swatches and makes clear the differences between fabrics in a way that only touching them can. The linen-cotton canvas was the perfect substrate for a tea towel.

I’ve put the design up on their site so if you are interested in ordering a set of towels for yourself, you can! I’m trying to figure out what else I could do with this print now that I’ve digitized it. Any suggestions, I’m all ears!

  1. How bright and cheerful your new tea towels
are and bring a personal touch to your kitchen.

  2. Those turned out great! I have the same dark kitchen and lately I’ve been eyeballing the valance over the window. Time for a change I think. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. The quality is so beautiful! It doesn’t look digitally printed at all! It is a great way to use the pyrex design too. I have a collection of the aqua snowflake pattern and was so sad to find out that these probably contain mercury. :(
BTW- I just found your blog and I LOVE your mission statement!! Cheers!
