Today in my series of interviews with sewing bloggers on their connection between sewing & style, I’m delighted to feature Shannon of ShanniLoves. Shannon was one of my amazing test sewers for my Presidio Purse, but I’ve been secretly crushing on her bright, cheerful style since long before then. And I can totally relate to have a style described as “all over the place”! I’m delighted to share her thoughts on the connection between her ability to sew and her personal style.
Hello there! I’m Shannon and I have developed a healthy obsession for sewing. I like to talk about it as well as show off my makes, good or bad over at my blog, Shanni Loves. I’m a country gal who loves animals of all variety…my fat little pug Vito, my 3 cats Orlando, Spankey and Pixie Pants and my husband, Ryan. During the day you can find me at my job either analyzing numbers or daydreaming about my next sewing project. :)
Describe your style.
I think my style is all over the place and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I love retro, trendy, glamour, bohemian, grungy, preppy. I’m having a hard time here picking just one word to describe my style so I asked my husband, his reply, “All over the place”. Finally we agree on something!
Describe what you sew.
This year I decided to take the no RTW challenge so needless to say I will be sewing a lot of clothes. I hope to one day have my closet filled with all me-mades. Looking back on what I’ve made the past 3 years I see that I tend to gravitate towards prints and I’ve made quite a few dresses. This year I want to focus on finding that TNT pattern or “cake” as some say. I want to master the perfect fit so I can easily whip it up in different colors and fabrics and make it all my own.
What inspires or influences your style?
My inspiration is pulled from many sources…decades past, television, style magazines, other sewing bloggers. There are so many pretty things out there to be inspired by sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming. My style can also be influenced by my mood, how did I feel after I rolled out of bed that day… Spunky or Scruffy??
I look at every day as a chance to play dress-up. How do you play dress-up?
I love playing dress up and luckily I have a job that allows for that otherwise I might never crawl out of my oversized tee and yoga pants.
How does your passion for sewing influence your style?
It’s been fun these past 3 years exploring my style and trying out new things. Before I started sewing I always felt so limited. RTW clothing can be so much of the same. There are a few times I’ve went to work dressed exactly like someone else! Knowing how to sew means I don’t have to worry about that happening anymore. It gives me the ability to try out all the many styles I love and be uniquely me.
What about over time: Has your style changed with time? Have your sewing abilities changed with time?
My sewing abilities as well as my style is ever changing, kind of like my hair. Whenever I get bored I find a new style or technique I want to try. That’s the beauty of sewing, endless possibilities with no room for boredom.
What about in the beginning: Did you learn to sew so that you could have a certain style?
I started sewing because I needed a hobby. I’ve always had a creative side and it was screaming at me to put down the remote and discover what you’re good at. So no I didn’t start sewing to attain a certain style but it certainly has lead me there. Sewing has become such a part of me I couldn’t imagine ever giving it up. It keeps me sane, yet drives me insane at times.
Anything else you would like to say about sewing and style?
Thank you so much Erin for asking me to take part and share my thoughts. Learning how to sew has been one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. It’s encouraged me to crawl out of my shell and express myself, to never be afraid to try new things. With everything I make I discover a little more about myself and I’m eager to keep on learning.
