Mom Made Birthday Presents

In honor of my birthday last week, and my visit to my mom’s house over the weekend, this week of posts is going to be todo sobre mi madre. In short, my mom is amazingly creative and talented and inspiring. She’s a phenomenal quilter, applique-er, and stitcher, amongst so many other talents and I’m so excited to show off some of her amazing work!

Now, the birthday presents my mom gave me! My mom stitched this lovely pillow based on a pattern by Wooden Spool Designs called Sewing Mends the Soul. We met the owner/designer Debbie at Sew Expo and had a great time meeting such a sweet and creative woman. My mom has made several of her designs including Fresh Fruit and O Christmas Tree. Mom sewed the rick-rack and ribbons on the pillow using zig-zag topstitch with a clear thread. She’s done a bunch of experimenting with different clear threads and picked her favorite, so I’ll wrangle some more information from her and share it soon.

The pattern also included a pattern for a little pincushion.

Mom also made me a new wallet. This wasn’t a suprise because I’ve been begging her for a new one. A few years ago she made one for everyone in the family for Christmas and I have worn mine to death (as you can see on the right). It’s a pattern by Lazy Girl Designs called Wonder Wallet. It’s the perfect size, both cute and functional. I love it!

The best part, it uses several cute quilting fabrics. And my mom found a pink print with bicycles and scooters. OMG could it get any better!!?!

As if mom’s handmade presents weren’t enough, she also gave me a lovely collection of mostly vintage notions. The package started with the most perfect-for-me vintage trim ever seen. It’s pink and green and lacy and leaves. Perfect. Divine. And it’s so perfect that I’m going to be terrified to ever use it in something because I love it too much!

I got several buttons from the 1930’s. The top set is definitely mercury glass. The one on the right has cherries on it. So fun!

I got a bag full of clasps. These will be so much fun to add to knitting. I’ve been eyeing a capelet for quite a while that would be perfect for some of these!

These are an assortment of silk ribbons with wires in their edges that are perfect for making flowers. Not that I ever need more things to make, but I should a new batch of silk flowers. They are fun to make!

I got a length of antique lace. I also got an assortment of clear buttons, metal buttons, purple silk velvet ribbon, matching piping and rosette trims, and a really interesting burgundy trim embroidered with silver and gold. I was spoiled rotten!
