Introducing…the Laminaria Swimsuit! It’s a one piece swimsuit with a sinuous inset panel that wraps around the body like its namesake kelp. The pattern is fully lined and comes with 2 different cup size options (A-C cup or D-F cup) to make fitting a breeze. View A has decorative inset panels while View B is plain. Either can be sewed with a sharp V neck or an easier to sew rounded V neckline. Instructions are included for optional cup insertion. The straps can be tied around the neck halter style or can be attached to the back either straight down or crossed across the back.
And in further exciting news, the pdf pattern is a layered pattern AND it’s also available in print!
Laminaria is the scientific name for kelp (referring to the order Laminariales, family Laminariaciae, or genus Laminaria). When developing the swimsuit, I pictured being a kid and growing up with summers spent on the Washington and Oregon coast. We had so much fun when we’d find bull kelp washed up on the shore. It was a great tool for make-believe especially when we wrapped it around ourselves and pretended to be mermaids!
In its most simple view, the Laminaria is actually a really quick and easy sew. A confident beginner with just a bit of previous experience sewing knits should be able to handle it. There will be lots of sewalong tips, tricks, and walkthroughs to help!
The inset panels give you the option of making a totally unique suit with all sorts of personality. Choose a similar fabric for a subtle swirl or contrasting fabric for lots of pop – I even have a tutorial planned for how to make them out of a sexy mesh like my model Sandi is wearing!
