I’ve been having so much fun wearing my romper, even in SF weather, that I had to make a cooler weather version – a jumpsuit. I gave a sneak peak of it a while ago while it was a work-in-progress, but I must admit that I finished it a while ago and I’ve been wearing it incessantly since. Seriously, once (or even twice) a week. I feel like I’m wearing pajamas it’s so comfortable! I’m quite happy with my fabric and construction choices. I like that it looks a bit like workmans coveralls, but a fun and funky version. The grey is very versatile and all of the yellow contrast details (buttons, topstitching, and belt) really perk it up. I think the three-quarter sleeves and scoop neck keep me from drowning in grey fabric. I usually wear it without accessories (although it could use a big yellow bangle) and with my grey moccasins.
The best part about the jumpsuit is that it has plenty of room to sit and even squat comfortably.
I based it off of Simplicity 2222, but made quite a few modifications. I added a bit to the armscye in the front and quite a bit to the back (it was originally a racer-back shape) so that I could attach a sleeve. I drafted the sleeves myself and added the leg length. I finished the sleeve and leg cuffs with a large hem and topstitching. I modified the ruffles and placed them myself. And I added the belt loops and belt. I also chose to use snaps instead of buttons. The ruffles I modified by changing the width. The centermost ruffles are 1/4″ wider than the middle ruffles which are 1/4″ wider than the outside ruffles. I didn’t actually finish the edge of the ruffles but turned each edge over 1/4″ and topstitched. I experimented with doing a rolled edge finish, but the ruffles felt too stiff.
I serged all the inside seams and topstitched all of them with yellow (contrasting) thread. The belt is just a tube of fabric that I topstitched the edges and added snaps. I’m thinking I may go back and tighten it up a bit. I didn’t want it to bind, but it looks a little droopy. In summary, I’m totally in love with this jumpsuit, and I hope it makes others smile too!
